Understanding Carpet Area | Maximize Living Space

What is Carpet Area?

The carpet area is the actual usable area within an apartment or house, which can be covered by a carpet. It is the area that you can use to place your furniture, and it does not include any common areas such as staircases, lobbies, or elevators. In simpler terms, it is the area that you pay for and will actually use to live in.   How is the carpet area different from the built-up area and the super built-up area?   When you’re looking at apartment listings, you may come across terms such as built-up area and super built-up area. It’s important to understand the difference between these different types of areas.   The built-up area includes the carpet area plus the area occupied by walls, balconies, and other permanent structures. This area is generally about 10-20% more than the carpet area. This means that the built-up area includes the carpet area as well as the space covered by walls, and other permanent fixtures such as balconies, ducts, etc. It is the total area that is constructed on the floor, including the carpet area.   The super built-up area, also known as the saleable area, includes the built-up area as well as common areas such as lobbies, staircases, and elevators. It can be up to 40% larger than the carpet area. It is the area that you pay for but cannot use for your personal purposes. For example, if you buy an apartment with a super built-up area of 1,000 square feet, you are paying for the carpet area of, say, 700 square feet plus the common areas such as lobbies, staircases, etc. that are shared by all the residents of the building.   It’s important to keep in mind that the definitions of these different types of areas may vary depending on the region or country you’re in.  For example, in some regions, the built-up area may include the area occupied by balconies and other semi-permanent fixtures, while in others, it may not. Hence, it is always advisable to check the specifics of what is being referred to when looking at apartment listings.

How can you maximize your living space within the carpet area?

There are several ways to make the most of your carpet area and create a comfortable living space:

Use multipurpose furniture:

Furniture that can be used for multiple purposes, such as a sofa bed or a coffee table with storage, can help save space and make your living area more functional.

Optimize storage:

Maximizing storage space is crucial in small apartments. Use wall-mounted shelves, storage ottomans, and other creative storage solutions to keep your belongings organized and out of the way.

Choose the right color scheme:

Light colors can make a room look bigger and brighter. Using a consistent color scheme throughout the apartment can also create a sense of continuity and flow.

Use mirrors:

Mirrors can create the illusion of more space by reflecting light and making a room look larger.

Keep it clutter-free:

A cluttered living space can make even a large apartment feel cramped. Regularly decluttering and organizing your belongings can help create a more spacious and relaxing living environment.   Why is understanding the carpet area important when buying or renting a home?   Understanding carpet area is important when buying or renting a home because it helps you get an accurate measure of the usable living space. This means that you can compare different apartments or houses based on the actual space available for you to use, rather than just the total area. For example, an apartment with a larger built-up area may have a smaller carpet area due to the inclusion of common areas such as staircases, lifts, and lobbies. By knowing the carpet area, you can make an informed decision about whether the space is suitable for your needs.   Additionally, knowing the carpet area can help you determine if the space meets your needs and if you can afford it. You can calculate the cost per square foot of the carpet area to compare different properties and ensure that you are getting value for your money. This is especially important if you have a budget to stick to or if you are looking for a specific size of living space.   Moreover, planning the layout and furniture arrangement in your new home is easier when you know the carpet area. You can measure the size of your furniture and plan where to place them to maximize the available space. This can also help you avoid clutter and create a more comfortable and functional living space.
